Not very many of them were Christians, so he used that supposedly "circular" argument to try to get them to take a look at the Gospel: The odds say that you should look at the Gospel and give it some serious consideration. That's all. Anyone that uses it to say, "The odds say you should be a Christian" [IMHO] goes too far. BTW, it actually is our nature to love comfort and play the odds. I see it every day with my students- they don't love truth and they certainly don't seek it. They constantly play the odds that I won't check the homework and comfort themselves with the thought that I'll give them some extra credit assignment (which is false comfort, I don't swing that way, and they know it) to make up for their laziness. Next time you're back in Philly you should come to church with me- run your ideas of "rot & decay" past my dad and see what he says... Odds are you'll be surprised.
