Goals for ‘06

1. Purchase and learn to ride a unicycle.

2. Read Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness in Grade 2 Contracted Braille.
- learnt punctuation and reviewed Grade 1 Braille (letters, numbers, etc). Starting on Grade 2 contractions soon (hopefully next week).

3. Find a way to exercise even during the winter.

4. Read the two neuroscience textbooks that I bought for my neuroanatomy class but never really needed.
- have started on Neuroscience.. a few chapters in. I’ve decided to skip the microlevel hardware chapters for now and am focusing on the processing stuff (somatosensory perception etc). Not a bad read.

5. Save an extra $200 a month. Contribute the max amount to my IRA without breaking the bank, eliminating travel plans or jeopardizing my first year of medical school.
- Well, no extra savings yet. but I’m keeping tabs on my expenditure this month to see where I can cut back.
I’ve decided that there’s enough in each paycheck (biweekly) to save an extra $50 from each check, so I’ve added $50 to my automatic transfer into a savings account… the out of sight, out of mind thing works really well for my finances :) So… that’ll get me up to an extra $100 a month… will wait till the end of this month to find another a way to cut another $100 out of my expenses.

6. Somehow finish knitting up that ball of hideous pink yarn, find uses for the random other balls of yarn that i have lying around… and actually attempt knitting something other than hats and scarves. Also learn to cable knit.
- Ok, the hideous pink yarn has been used up. I made a short but fluffy pink and purple scarf, which, if I were more into bright colours, I might actually wear someday :P Also, I’ve started knitting a vest, which has been quite a cool experience, except that I think I’ve pinched a nerve or something because my thumb has gone kinda numb. putting knitting on hold for a few days. AND, the cable stitch holder has come in the mail, so I can start cable knitting as and when time allows….. fun :)

7. Climb Kilimanjaro.

8. Go home to Singapore for at least a month.

9. Learn at least 2-3 tasty ways of cooking fish.
- 1) Breaded and fried flounder. simple, but yummy.
- 2) Baked tilapia with a lemon butter sauce and green onions. again, simple, but yummy :)
